
Ancient fire-making tools unearthed at a site in eastern England are rewriting what we thought we knew about when humans learned not just to use fire, but to make it.
Archaeologists working at Barnham, a Paleolithic site in Suffolk, have uncovered the oldest known evidence of deliberate fire‑making, dated to around 400,000 years ago.[1][2] This discovery, published in Nature, pushes back the earliest secure date for humans igniting fire by roughly 350,000 years.[1][2] Until now, the oldest widely accepted evidence of fire‑making came from Neanderthal sites in northern France, dated to about 50,000 years ago.[1][2]
From borrowing fire to making it
Researchers have long distinguished between using fire and making fire.[2] Early humans could have taken burning branches from natural wildfires millions of years ago, tending embers and feeding them with fuel.[2][3] There is suggestive evidence for controlled fire use by Homo erectus and other early humans at sites over 700,000 years old, and possibly older, but these do not prove people could reliably ignite new fires on demand.[2][3]
That is why the new Barnham find is so significant. It provides the first clear archaeological snapshot, anywhere in the world, of the technology of ignition itself.
The Barnham hearth: a 400,000‑year‑old fire spot
Barnham has been excavated for decades, but new work by a British Museum–led team has revealed a small area that preserves a remarkably complete picture of a hearth.[1] In one tightly defined patch, archaeologists found:
- Baked clay that had been heated to very high temperatures
- Flint hand axes and other tools fractured by intense heat
- Two fragments of iron pyrite (“fool’s gold”)[1]
Geochemical analysis showed that temperatures in the hearth exceeded 700°C (1,292°F), with evidence of repeated burning in the same spot over time.[1] That pattern is consistent with a constructed hearth carefully used and maintained, rather than a one‑off natural wildfire or lightning strike.[1]
Crucially, iron pyrite does not occur naturally at Barnham.[1] Its presence means the inhabitants must have:

- Collected it elsewhere and transported it to the site

Rob Davis, a Paleolithic archaeologist at the British Museum, describes the combination of high temperatures, controlled burning and pyrite fragments as showing “how they were actually making the fire and the fact they were making it.”[1]
Why this is different from earlier fire evidence
Archaeologists have debated evidence of fire from much older sites in Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Some show burned bones, reddened sediments, or microscopic ash layers that may point to controlled use of fire as early as 1 million years ago.[2][3] But these are often ambiguous: natural wildfires, slow‑burning grass fires, or later disturbance can mimic the same signals.[2][3]

Who was making these fires?
Fossils from Britain and Spain from this time suggest the Barnham inhabitants were likely early Neanderthals or closely related hominins.[1][2] Their skull features and ancient DNA studied elsewhere in Europe indicate growing brain size and increasing technological sophistication during the period between 500,000 and 400,000 years ago.[1][2]
The Barnham site fits neatly into this broader pattern: around this time, archaeologists begin to see more complex tools, more intensive use of landscapes, and now, clear signs of pyrite‑and‑flint fire‑making technology.[1][2]
Fire as a turning point in human evolution
Fire changed everything for our ancestors.[2][3] Once humans could make fire on demand, they no longer had to rely on rare lightning strikes or carry embers over long distances.[2]
This capability brought profound advantages:

- Social life and communication: Evenings around a hearth created time and space for planning, storytelling and social bonding—conditions many researchers link to the development of language and more structured societies.[1][3]
By about 300,000–400,000 years ago, archaeological evidence for controlled fire use becomes far more frequent, and by roughly 125,000 years ago, regular fire use by anatomically modern humans is almost universal.[2] The Barnham discovery helps pinpoint the moment when this shift toward reliable, habitual fire use was empowered by a concrete ignition technology.
A small mineral, a big story
Iron pyrite may not look like much—just glittery “fool’s gold.” But at Barnham, two small fragments tell a big story. They show that by 400,000 years ago, humans in northern Europe:
- Understood specific material properties (sparks from pyrite and flint)
- Organized resource collection beyond what was immediately available on site
- Could carry, protect and repeatedly use a fire‑starting kit
