What encrypted DNS actually does
By default, many networks still resolve domain names in ways that are easy for the local network or ISP to observe. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) or DNS over TLS (DoT) encrypts that lookup so nearby observers see less about which hostnames you resolve.
- Useful for: reducing casual DNS snooping on home or office networks; making resolver choice more intentional; a low-friction upgrade when you only need lookup privacy.
- Not a full tunnel: encrypted DNS does not hide your IP from websites, does not encrypt all traffic, and does not replace HTTPS.
- Still your responsibility: a malicious site is still a malicious site after a private lookup.
When a VPN is the better fit
A reputable VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the provider, then exits from the provider’s network. That is a different job than encrypting DNS alone.
- Untrusted Wi‑Fi — cafés, hotels, airports: a VPN covers more than name lookups.
- Consistent exit policy — when you want traffic to leave from a known provider path, not only a different resolver.
- Mixed threat model — if your concern is the local network observing destinations and payloads beyond DNS, DNS encryption alone is incomplete.
Skip pages that invent infections or countdown clocks. Prefer clear pricing, a real company identity, and an honest description of what the tool does.
