Top-flight footballers will be banned from advertising gambling this year, although casino and betting sponsors will still be allowed on their shirts.
In a move designed to stop gambling appealing to children, the advertising watchdog will also ban other sports stars popular with under-18s and participants from reality TV shows such as Love Island from promoting betting.
The new rules, which will come into force in October in time for the World Cup — which starts in Qatar on November 21 — will also stop gambling adverts from using or referencing video game content and gameplay popular with young people.
