1. GAUDÍ’S MASTERPIECES: LA SAGRADA FAMILIA, PARK GÜELL, CASA MILÀ AND CASA BATLLÓ
There’s no way you can go to Barcelona and skip the works of architect Antoni Gaudí, whose surrealistic, Art Nouveau-style buildings practically define the appearance of the city. His masterpiece is the Sagrada Família basilica, a stunning church comprising spindly towers, bone-like features and extravagantly ornate details. Uncompleted in Gaudí’s lifetime, it remains officially a work in progress to this day. Just as fantastical is Park Güell, a colourful 17-hectare wonderland of landscaped gardens, woodlands, fountains, grottoes, winding staircases and more, including the home of Barcelona’s famous ‘mosaic lizard’. More intimate but no less impressive are the Casa Milà and Casa Batlló buildings. The former is nicknamed “The Stone Quarry” because of its rough-hewn, undulating stone façade, while the latter has a skeletal but beautifully dreamy facade that looks straight out of a twisted fairytale.
